5 reasons UK families are switching to natural repellent bracelets

No DEET. No sting. No sticky sprays. Just tie one on.

1. Some people really do get bitten more, and it isn't bad luck

Mosquitoes and midges don't hunt at random. They track body heat, the CO2 you breathe out and the bacteria on your skin, and roughly one in five people give off the exact combination they're drawn to. Nothing you do changes it, which is why you're the one covered in bites while everyone else walks away untouched.

And it compounds. One bad night turns into a week of scratching, evenings spent indoors, and marks you're still covering up a fortnight later.

Ours work differently to a spray you have to smell all evening. Each bracelet releases a low concentration of natural plant oils, barely noticeable to you, but enough that mosquitoes, midges, horseflies, ticks and wasps keep their distance. It works around your whole body, not just the wrist it's tied to, so one is usually plenty. Some people add a second at the ankle in hotter climates.

2. Sprays stop working before the mosquitoes do

Most sprays give you four to six hours, and almost nobody reapplies. You put it on getting ready, and by the time you're sat outside later that evening it's already wearing thin, with the bottle back in the room.

That's the exact window that matters. Mosquitoes are at their most active in the hours after sunset, which is precisely when you're outdoors in shorts and a t-shirt with your arms and legs bare. So you get bitten during the part of the evening you were looking forward to, then spend the rest of the trip reapplying "just in case" and still getting caught.

A bracelet doesn't need remembering. It goes on once and keeps working for around 10 days, right through the evenings you'd otherwise be unprotected.

3. The one your kids will actually keep on

Anything sticky, cold or strong-smelling comes off children within about a minute and you can't reapply what they won't let you near. So they're the ones getting bitten, and because children scratch in their sleep, one bite turns into broken skin, a night of you both awake, and a fortnight of you saying don't scratch it. Ours feel like a friendship band, so kids ask for them in their colour instead of pulling them off. They're fully waterproof too, and so the pool doesn't undo the protection the moment they get in. For little ones, or the ones who won't wear anything at all, our repellent patches stick straight onto their clothes for up to 36 hours.

Pestects bands are my trusted favourites. I was sceptical about using them 3 years ago. They are brilliant. I have never been bitten by any insects while wearing the bracelets.

I wear one on my wrist and one on my ankle when I’m in a place renowned for mosquitoes. Other times, I just have one on an ankle, like at home in the summer. I never take them off. I just replace a band after a number of weeks. I have used them twice in Florida, Vietnam Dominican Republic, Turkey and other places in Europe. No bites. Brilliant.

4. Kind to sensitive skin, because ours is too

DEET is effective, but it's harsh: stinging, redness and irritation are common, and for anyone with sensitive skin the reaction can genuinely be worse than the bites you were trying to avoid. You end up choosing between two kinds of uncomfortable, and most people quietly give up on repellent altogether, which is how you end up with nothing at all in the one week you needed it. That's exactly why we started Pestects: we have sensitive skin ourselves and couldn't stand what the sprays did to it. Ours sit on your wrist, not irritating your skin, natural plant oils, no stinging, no rash, and none of that chemical smell that follows you round all evening.

5. They keep for two years and you'll use them more than you think

Most people buy repellent the week before they fly, use half of it, and forget about it until the next trip. But you get bitten at home too, the garden after work, walking the dog, sat out on a warm evening. UK midges are relentless, and the bites are no kinder for being British.

Each pack holds 12 bracelets, they all sit together in one resealable pack rather than individually wrapped, less packaging, and our own testing shows they hold strength better that way. Better still, the clock only runs while a bracelet is out of the packet. Wear one for a weekend away, seal it back up, and the days it hasn't used are still there waiting - fresh for up to two years.

Which is why most people end up with one pack in the drawer and one in the suitcase. Covered at home, covered abroad whenever you go.

Wear them. If you still get bitten, you get your money back.

Try them at home first if you like, put one on during the evening, in the spot you always get bitten, and see for yourself. Or save them for your trip, that's fine too. Any time in the next 45 days, if they're not for you, just tell us. Full refund, nothing to return, no forms, no argument.

Loved by thousands of insect magnets

Glad I got these

"Excellent product, the bracelets come in various colours so my son and husband usually choose the darker colours, my daughter and I the brighter. We’ve been Mexico, Tenerife and turkey and these bands have never let us down. My daughter has had leukemia and undergone a bone marrow transplant so we are always extremely worried about bites with her but these bands have given us much more peace of mind. She wears one on her wrist and one on her ankle and has been great every time. Please don’t hesitate- get them NOW!"

"I have just come back from Borneo and despite being right in the jungle 1hr 45mins over the open sea in a speedboat despite lots of insects, I didnt get bitten once and everytime insects were around they moved away from me. I wore a bracelet on wrist and ankle. A great product that really works."

Insects love me!

"Insects love me. My husband rarely gets bitten whereas I get covered /eaten alive in bites. Purchased these (now on second pack) & was amazed they actually worked. Made a huge mistake this week of gardening without wearing one (normally wear 24/7!) & now have loads of bites😡 which at least served as a reminder to write a review for this company."
